SAW sits on Istanbul's Asian side, noticeably closer to Kadıköy than to the Sultanahmet/Blue Mosque tourist core across the Bosphorus — on a tight layover, a walk through Kadıköy's markets and ferry-front cafés is a far more realistic target than trying to cross to the old city and back.

Inside the airport

The terminal (opened 2019) is compact by mega-hub standards — duty-free, a food court, and paid lounge access via Priority Pass, but no dedicated day rooms.

No hotel sits inside the terminal itself; a few landside properties in nearby Kurtköy/Pendik run short shuttles, but re-clearing security to get back airside eats into a short layover, so only book one if you're genuinely leaving the airport for the night.

Staying inside the international transit area for a same-day connection generally needs no visa, but that's different from clearing passport control to go into the city — most non-Turkish, non-visa-exempt nationalities need a Turkish e-visa (apply online in advance; roughly $20–60 depending on passport) to do that.
