Transport Options at PTY
Tocumen International Airport is connected to Tocumen and the wider Panama transport network by multiple ground transport options.
Metrobus and other local buses connect Tocumen to Panama City, but most travelers now use the extended Panama Metro instead — Line 2 runs from a station at the airport, transferring at San Miguelito to Line 1 for downtown, with contactless card/tap payment and no need to buy a separate metro card.
Official airport taxis operate on a fixed-fare system from a staffed counter in arrivals — expect roughly $25–35 to central Panama City (around 30–45 minutes depending on traffic), which is pricier than the metro but far simpler with luggage.
Uber and Cabify both operate at Tocumen with a designated pickup area; fares to the city are typically cheaper than the fixed-rate airport taxis, often in the $15–25 range depending on time of day and demand.
All major international brands have counters in the arrivals hall; a car is useful for exploring beyond Panama City (the Canal locks, Pacific beaches) but unnecessary if you're staying purely in the capital, where traffic and parking make rideshare simpler.
The Panama Metro Line 2 extension to the airport made public transit a genuinely fast, cheap option (under $1, about 30–45 minutes) — worth using instead of a taxi if you're traveling light and want to save real money on the transfer.
