Best use of a long layover

The Marche de Papeete municipal market is about 15 minutes away by taxi; the InterContinental Tahiti Resort, about 2km away, is a closer option for a drink.

Inside the airport

An open-air terminal offers duty-free monoi oil, local snacks, pineapple juice, and flower-crown stalls.

No dedicated sleep zones exist in the terminal; the InterContinental Tahiti Resort (about 2km away) or the Tahiti Airport Motel across the street are the practical options -- confirm which fits before booking.

French Polynesia is not part of Schengen, so a Schengen visa does not cover it -- nationalities not otherwise exempt need a visa specifically valid for French Polynesia from a French diplomatic mission. US, Canadian, and EU citizens are typically visa-free for short stays up to 3 months. Travelers connecting through Los Angeles should also check US ESTA/transit requirements separately.
Transit visa requirements vary by nationality and change frequently. Always verify with the official embassy or consulate of French Polynesia before travel.

Practical Tips for Your PPT Layover

Use left-luggage storage at Fa'a'ā International Airport if you plan to leave the terminal — most airports offer coin lockers or staffed storage near arrivals.
Get a French Polynesia eSIM before your layover so you have data for maps and translation the moment you land.
Download offline maps for Papeete in advance — useful if you leave the terminal and connectivity is patchy.
Always allow at least 3 hours buffer before your next departure when leaving the airport — immigration queues are unpredictable.
Check your next airline's check-in deadline. Some require you to be at the gate 45–60 minutes before departure.
