Port Moresby Jacksons International Airport (POM)

Getting Around

How to get to and from Port Moresby Jacksons International Airport — taxis, public transport, shuttles and car rental.

Transport Options at POM

Port Moresby Jacksons International Airport is connected to Port Moresby and the wider Papua New Guinea transport network by multiple ground transport options.

Bus & Shuttle

Public Motor Vehicles (PMVs) — shared minibuses — cover all parts of Port Moresby cheaply, and each one displays its route number and destination in the window; locals will generally help you find the right one. They're not set up for visitors with luggage heading straight from the airport, though, and overloading is common.

Taxi

Taxis operate from the ground transportation area; regulated fares into central Port Moresby run roughly 50–70 PGK (about US$12–18), though meters are rarely used and negotiating the fare upfront is standard practice. Have your hotel call a taxi for you rather than hailing one on the street, where robbery is a genuine risk.

Car Rental

Avis, Budget and Europcar-type agencies operate in the landside international arrivals area, but self-driving is not recommended for visitors unfamiliar with the city — road hazards and occasional stone-throwing incidents are reported in some areas, and a 4x4 with an experienced local driver is advised for anything outside the immediate city.

Insider tip

This is not an airport where you want to freelance your ground transport. Arrange a trusted driver or hotel transfer before you land, avoid travel after dark, and let someone at your hotel know who you're riding with — carjackings and muggings are a recognized risk in parts of Port Moresby, including areas not far from the airport.

Transport routes, fares and operators change frequently. Verify current options on the official Port Moresby Jacksons International Airport website before travel.

If travelling with heavy luggage, a private transfer or taxi is often more practical than public transport.
