Layover Guide

Making the most of your stopover at Paro International Airport — hotels, city tours and transit tips.

Your PBH Layover at a Glance

City AccessAccessible

Best use of a long layover

Paro Taktsang (the Tiger's Nest Monastery) is the region's best-known sight, though visiting it takes significantly more time than a short layover allows and requires a licensed guide.

Inside the airport

No specific airside shops or activities are confirmed beyond general terminal facilities — this is a small, single-terminal mountain-valley airport.

No specific airport hotel is confirmed; visitors typically stay in Thimphu or Paro town through arrangements made by their licensed tour operator.

Most visitors must pre-arrange their trip through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator and pay the Sustainable Development Fee (USD $100 per person per night for most nationalities, with reduced rates for Indian, Bangladeshi, and Maldivian nationals) as part of getting a visa before arrival — this isn't a casual visa-on-arrival process, so a spontaneous city layover isn't realistic without that arranged in advance.

Transit visa requirements vary by nationality and change frequently. Always verify with the official embassy or consulate of Bhutan before travel.

Practical Tips for Your PBH Layover

Use left-luggage storage at Paro International Airport if you plan to leave the terminal — most airports offer coin lockers or staffed storage near arrivals.

Get a Bhutan eSIM before your layover so you have data for maps and translation the moment you land.

Download offline maps for Paro in advance — useful if you leave the terminal and connectivity is patchy.

Always allow at least 3 hours buffer before your next departure when leaving the airport — immigration queues are unpredictable.

Check your next airline's check-in deadline. Some require you to be at the gate 45–60 minutes before departure.
