Nairobi is one of the few capitals bordering a national park — Nairobi National Park sits just south of the city and is reachable via the Expressway with comparatively little traffic, making a compressed game drive genuinely feasible on a long layover if your visa status and time allow leaving the terminal.

Inside the airport

Terminal 1's food, retail and a handful of airline lounges are the main options if you're not leaving; note that JKIA's international terminal facilities were rebuilt as a 'temporary' structure after an August 2013 fire, originally designed for roughly a 10-year lifespan, so expect basic amenities and double-check for gate changes.

No hotel could be independently confirmed as sitting directly inside the JKIA terminal — several hotels line Mombasa Road a short drive away, so budget transfer time rather than assuming an in-terminal option for an overnight layover.

Kenya's eTA (in effect since January 2024, about USD 32.50) doesn't apply if you stay in the international transit area without clearing immigration — that's visa-free. Since a May 2025 expansion, most African nationals (except Libya and Somalia) and several other previously exempt countries no longer need the eTA at all, so check your specific nationality's current status before assuming you need one.
Transit visa requirements vary by nationality and change frequently. Always verify with the official embassy or consulate of Kenya before travel.
