How to get to and from Velana International Airport — taxis, public transport, shuttles and car rental.
Transport Options at MLE
Velana International Airport is connected to Malé and the wider Maldives transport network by multiple ground transport options.
A public ferry (operated by MTCC) connects the airport island to Malé across the lagoon roughly every 15 minutes (about MVR 15 / $1, a 10-minute crossing); the 2.1km Sinamalé Bridge also links the airport to Malé/Hulhumalé by road.
Taxis can cross the Sinamalé Bridge to Malé/Hulhumalé in about 15 minutes. Resort transfers, however, are almost never by taxi — they go by speedboat (15–65 minutes depending on the resort), seaplane (20–45 minutes, daylight hours only, with last check-in around 15:30–16:00 MVT at the separate Noovilu Seaplane Terminal), or a domestic flight plus a boat connection, all arranged and paid for as part of your resort booking.
Car rental is essentially nonexistent in the Maldives — the islands are small, and inter-island transport runs by boat, seaplane or domestic flight rather than by road.
If your flight lands after about 15:30–16:00 local time, your resort's seaplane almost certainly won't fly that day — check your resort's cutoff in advance, since a late arrival may mean an unplanned night near the airport before the first seaplane out the next morning.
