Lanzhou's airport opened in 1970 with a single Ilyushin Il-14 flight and just five domestic routes, but geography forced planners to site it an unusually long 71 kilometers from downtown Lanzhou — reportedly the furthest any Chinese airport sits from the city center it serves. Decades of growth culminated in a massive new Terminal 3 that opened in March 2025, cementing the airport's role as northwestern China's key aviation hub.
The airport opened July 26, 1970, with its maiden flight operated by an Ilyushin Il-14 and only five domestic routes in service.
Annual passenger traffic reached 500,000 by 1995, up from around 100,000 in 1980, reflecting steady growth through the reform era.
Terminal 1 opened in 2001 with capacity for 2.6 million annual passengers.
Terminal 2, a 61,000-square-meter facility nicknamed for its 'wing of flying geese' shape, opened in February 2015 after a 1.488-billion-yuan investment, adding capacity for 10 million annual passengers.
