Transport Options at KWI
Kuwait International Airport is connected to Kuwait City and the wider Kuwait transport network by multiple ground transport options.
Local public buses (routes such as 13, 99 and 501) serve the airport with very cheap fares (roughly KD 0.25) but a slower journey of about 40 minutes into the city; luggage space is limited and buses can fill up quickly.
Official taxis from outside the terminal cost roughly KD 7-9 (around USD 25) to central Kuwait City, taking about 20-25 minutes; most drivers have limited English, so show your destination on a maps app and confirm the price (many trips are negotiated rather than metered).
Careem is the established ride-hailing app in Kuwait and is the most reliable option from the airport; Uber also operates but is less commonly used than Careem locally.
Major international rental agencies maintain counters at the airport, though current pickup locations depend on which terminal is active — confirm with your rental company given the terminal disruptions below.
Important 2026 gotcha: Terminal 1, the airport's main international terminal, has been closed since regional drone-strike damage in early-to-mid 2026 (part of wider US-Iran tensions) and remains shut as of August 2026, with no confirmed reopening date. Flights and ground transport pickup points are currently concentrated at Terminal 4 (Kuwait Airways) and Terminal 5 (Jazeera Airways) — check which terminal your airline is using before arranging a pickup, as it may differ from what older guides or booking confirmations say. A new Terminal 2 is targeted for late 2026.
