Best use of a long layover

Green Lake Park (Cuihu Park) and the adjacent Yunnan University area make for a pleasant walk, or the Yunnan Provincial Museum for something indoor — both roughly 40–50 minutes from the airport by taxi.

No hotel is built into the terminal; a couple of airport hotels sit a short shuttle ride away for a layover nap without heading into town.

Kunming Changshui is one of the mainland ports approved for China's 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit for eligible nationalities, letting you leave the airport between connecting international flights without a visa — but only if you're genuinely transiting to/from a third country or region, and you must register with border police on arrival.
