How to get to and from O.R. Tambo International Airport — taxis, public transport, shuttles and car rental.
Transport Options at JNB
O.R. Tambo International Airport is connected to Johannesburg and the wider South Africa transport network by multiple ground transport options.
The Gautrain's dedicated Airport Service runs between OR Tambo, Rhodesfield and Sandton in about 12 minutes non-stop to Sandton, with a fare of roughly R20-50. From Sandton or Marlboro you can transfer to the North-South line for Pretoria and other stations. Trains run 05:30-20:30, every 12 minutes at peak and every 20 minutes off-peak.
Some shuttle and bus services connect the airport to Johannesburg and Pretoria, generally slower and less frequent than the Gautrain.
Only use official, clearly marked airport taxis or pre-booked transfers — unmarked/unofficial taxis at JNB carry a well-documented safety risk that's worth taking seriously rather than treating as generic travel caution.
Uber and Bolt both operate at JNB with designated pickup points, and are widely used as a safer alternative to hailing an unofficial taxi.
Major international rental companies have counters at the airport.
The Gautrain's operating hours (ending around 20:30) mean a late arrival will need a taxi or rideshare regardless of preference — check your landing time against the schedule before planning your route into the city.
