Best use of a long layover

Al-Balad, Jeddah's UNESCO-listed historic quarter of coral-stone architecture, with the Corniche waterfront nearby — about 20-30 minutes from the airport by taxi under normal traffic.

Inside the airport

Terminal 1's central circular hub concentrates duty-free shopping and dining where the terminal's three wings converge, so even a tight connection gives you a reasonable browse without much walking.

Aerotel Jeddah is an airside transit hotel inside Terminal 1's central duty-free area — genuinely convenient, but it requires an active outbound boarding pass to book and sells in minimum six-hour blocks, so it only works if you're departing (not simply visiting) from that terminal.

Non-Saudi nationals need either a Saudi e-visa (arranged online in advance, roughly a year multiple-entry for tourism) or Saudia's free 96-hour stopover/transit visa — the latter requires a confirmed connecting ticket on Saudia itself and isn't available if you're flying another carrier. Confirm your specific eligibility before counting on leaving the airport, since the older South Terminal closed permanently in 2020 and all commercial operations (including whichever transit-visa desk applies) now run through the current terminal.
Transit visa requirements vary by nationality and change frequently. Always verify with the official embassy or consulate of Saudi Arabia before travel.
