Best use of a long layover

The Silver Line Metro now runs directly from IAD into downtown DC (roughly 45-60 minutes), making the free Smithsonian museums on the National Mall a realistic target for a long layover.

Inside the airport

The Capital One Lounge and United's Polaris/Club lounges cover most cardholders and premium-cabin passengers; the pay-per-hour Sleepbox Lounge on the Concourse A mezzanine offers small private sleep pods with Wi-Fi and blackout tint for a nap between flights.

There's no hotel inside security at Dulles; the Washington Dulles Airport Marriott and Hyatt Regency Dulles are both a few minutes away by free shuttle for a proper layover bed.

Flag: the US has no airside-only international transit zone. Every arriving passenger — including pure connections — must clear CBP immigration and recheck bags, so anyone flying through Dulles needs a valid US visa or, for Visa Waiver Program nationals, an approved ESTA, regardless of whether they plan to leave the airport. CBP's old transit-without-visa allowance was suspended in late 2025, making this stricter than it used to be.
