HNL's open-air, garden-courtyard terminal design — including the lesser-known Cultural Gardens tucked between concourses — makes it one of the more pleasant airports to simply sit in rather than parking at the first gate you reach.

No hotel sits inside HNL's terminals; the closest option, the Wyndham-affiliated Airport Honolulu Hotel just outside the airport, is a short shuttle ride rather than a walk — factor that in if you're chasing a few hours' sleep between long-haul legs.

As at every US airport, there is no international transit zone: any foreign national connecting through HNL must clear full CBP inspection — a valid US visa or ESTA/VWP authorization is required — whether or not you plan to leave the airport, and that CBP clearance itself eats into a short layover before you even reach the curb.
