Transport Options at HNL
Daniel K. Inouye International Airport is connected to Honolulu, Oahu and the wider United States transport network by multiple ground transport options.
Honolulu's Skyline light rail reached the airport on October 16, 2025, with the new Lelepaua Station linked to Terminal 1 by a pedestrian bridge near Hawaiian Airlines check-in. However, the line currently ends at Middle Street in Kalihi, about five miles short of Waikiki, so it does not yet offer a one-seat ride to where most visitors stay — an onward bus, rideshare, or hotel shuttle is needed to finish the trip. Fare is about $3 with a HOLO card.
TheBus (Oahu's public transit) serves the airport with routes reaching Waikiki, Downtown, and elsewhere for about $3 with a HOLO card, but regular buses restrict oversized or multiple luggage, so it suits light packers more than typical vacationers with checked bags.
Metered taxis are available curbside. Typical fares run roughly $40-55 to Waikiki (25-45 min) and $20-30 to Downtown Honolulu (15-25 min), plus a per-bag charge on some cabs — treat these as approximate, traffic-dependent ranges.
Uber and Lyft operate normally from designated pickup zones at the terminals; pricing is broadly comparable to taxis and can rise with surge pricing at peak times.
A large Consolidated Rent-A-Car facility housing all major brands is reachable via free shuttle from the terminals.
The new $3 Skyline rail sounds like the obvious budget choice, but since it currently stops well short of Waikiki, the full door-to-door trip (train plus bus/rideshare transfer, with stairs and no dedicated baggage area) can take 45-60 minutes or more — sometimes longer than a direct taxi in bad traffic. It's genuinely useful for Downtown/Kalihi-bound travelers but less so for the typical Waikiki visitor at this stage of the line's buildout.
