Rio Galeão – Tom Jobim International Airport is connected to Rio De Janeiro and the wider Brazil transport network by multiple ground transport options.
The BRT Transcarioca bus runs at Rio's flat municipal fare (about R$5) but is slow, can be crowded at peak times, and requires a transfer at the Alvorada terminal — realistically workable only with light luggage. Runs roughly 05:00-23:00.
Official yellow taxis queue at metered ranks outside arrivals (roughly R$6.30 flag fall plus around R$3.85/km by day, more at night and on Sundays) — expect around R$85-100 plus tolls for the roughly 20km trip to Copacabana. Cooperative desks inside the terminal (Transcoopass, Cootramo) offer fixed fares at a premium over the metered rate.
Uber and 99 both operate at GIG with dynamic, in-app pricing — pickup signage can be unclear and driver availability drops late at night.
Major rental companies operate counters in the terminal.
For most visitors with normal luggage, a metered yellow taxi or rideshare is the practical choice — the BRT bus saves money but adds real time and a transfer, a rough trade-off after a long flight.
