Best use of a long layover

Walking across the land border into Gibraltar town and up to the Rock (cable car, the Barbary macaques) — genuinely feasible given the proximity, but budget time to clear immigration twice.

Inside the airport

A small terminal with the Calpe Lounge, cash machines (Sterling and Euro), a prayer room, a kids' play area, and charging points near gates 1–3; the exact shop and restaurant lineup was not independently itemized.

No hotel inside the airport is confirmed; a Holiday Inn Express appeared in searches as a nearby option, but its distance and walkability from the terminal were not independently verified.

Gibraltar is not in Schengen, but under a UK–EU agreement provisionally applying from mid-2026, short-stay entry conditions are aligned with Schengen rules and arrivals clear both Gibraltar and Spanish immigration checks; British passport holders get 90/180 days.
Transit visa requirements vary by nationality and change frequently. Always verify with the official embassy or consulate of Gibraltar before travel.

Practical Tips for Your GIB Layover

Use left-luggage storage at Gibraltar Airport if you plan to leave the terminal — most airports offer coin lockers or staffed storage near arrivals.
Get a Gibraltar eSIM before your layover so you have data for maps and translation the moment you land.
Download offline maps for Gibraltar in advance — useful if you leave the terminal and connectivity is patchy.
Always allow at least 3 hours buffer before your next departure when leaving the airport — immigration queues are unpredictable.
Check your next airline's check-in deadline. Some require you to be at the gate 45–60 minutes before departure.
