Best use of a long layover

Mulafossur waterfall is about 15 minutes from the airport by car -- one of the most recognizable Faroese landmarks.

Inside the airport

Amenities are minimal: one cafe (landside and airside) and a small duty-free shop.

The airport closes overnight (opening about 90 minutes before the first flight and closing an hour after the last), so no in-terminal overnight stay is possible; the Vagar Hotel is about a 2-minute walk across from the terminal.

The Faroe Islands are part of the Kingdom of Denmark but are not in the EU or Schengen Area -- a Schengen visa does not cover the Faroe Islands, and vice versa, even though Danish missions issue both. Travelers visa-exempt for short Schengen stays can usually visit visa-free for up to 90 days; everyone else needs a specific Faroese visa from a Danish mission. Because most flights route through Denmark, some nationalities may also need a separate Schengen transit visa just to connect.
Transit visa requirements vary by nationality and change frequently. Always verify with the official embassy or consulate of Faroe Islands before travel.

Practical Tips for Your FAE Layover

Use left-luggage storage at Vágar Airport if you plan to leave the terminal — most airports offer coin lockers or staffed storage near arrivals.
Get a Faroe Islands eSIM before your layover so you have data for maps and translation the moment you land.
Download offline maps for Vágar in advance — useful if you leave the terminal and connectivity is patchy.
Always allow at least 3 hours buffer before your next departure when leaving the airport — immigration queues are unpredictable.
Check your next airline's check-in deadline. Some require you to be at the gate 45–60 minutes before departure.
