A day-tour to Hissor (Hisor) Fortress is a commonly offered, dedicated layover product from local tour operators — a good sign that layover day-trips here are an established travel option.

Inside the airport

Fairly thin — the pay-only CIP lounge is reportedly not worth the cost, WiFi is very slow, and food options are limited to one reported 24-hour snack bar of unconfirmed location; bringing your own snacks is advisable.

Several nearby hotels offer shuttle service and are close enough for an easy overnight break (including Kiropol, Hilton, Hotel Dehlavi, and Atlas Hotel, all within about 1.5km).

Most nationalities need either an e-Visa (about $50, usually processed quickly) or a visa-on-arrival at the airport (about $40 cash — new, crisp USD bills only — with a roughly 10-minute wait and an on-site photo); CIS-country citizens travel visa-free. Some nationalities (including China, India, Iran, and Pakistan) are e-Visa only, with no airport VOA option, and some visa rejections have been reported, so this isn't guaranteed to be smooth for every nationality.

Transit visa requirements vary by nationality and change frequently. Always verify with the official embassy or consulate of Tajikistan before travel.
