Getting Around

Katunayake South railway station sits about 1-2 km from the terminal (not walkable — reached by a short tuk-tuk or taxi ride from Arrivals). Regular commuter trains run roughly hourly on the coastal/Puttalam line to Colombo Fort, taking about 50-60 minutes for a very cheap fare (well under LKR 100 in ordinary class). A separate once-daily nonstop 'Airport Express' service also exists for around LKR 500, but it is not a frequent, metro-style link — check current timetables before planning around it.

Public and private coaches on Route 187 run directly from outside the terminal to Colombo Fort Bus Station via the Katunayake Expressway, taking roughly 40-50 minutes for around LKR 120-150; air-conditioned private coaches cost about the same as the public bus.

Prepaid taxi counters in Arrivals quote roughly LKR 2,000-3,000 (about USD 7-10) to central Colombo via the expressway, taking 30-45 minutes depending on traffic and destination; confirm whether the expressway toll is included before paying.

Uber and PickMe both operate at BIA with a dedicated official pickup zone (introduced after past complaints about touts overcharging and harassing arriving passengers at the terminal); app fares are typically cheaper than the prepaid taxi counters.

Several international and local rental agencies have counters in the arrivals terminal, though most visitors hire a car with driver rather than self-drive given local traffic conditions.
