Best use of a long layover

Basel's Old Town (Swiss sector, about 20 minutes by bus/tram) is the stronger draw, with the Kunstmuseum Basel and the Rhine riverside promenade; Saint-Louis on the French side is a much smaller, quieter option if you'd rather stay close.

Inside the airport

No hotel sits inside the terminal; airport-adjacent hotels cluster on the Swiss-sector side near Basel.

Both France and Switzerland are in the Schengen Area, so EU/Schengen-exempt travelers can exit through either the French or Swiss sector freely, and Schengen visa holders can do the same. Switzerland is outside the EU customs union, though, so duty-free allowances and VAT rules differ between the two sides even though passport control is unified.
Transit visa requirements vary by nationality and change frequently. Always verify with the official embassy or consulate of France before travel.
