History

Regional Express (Rex) was formed in 2002 through the merger of two long-established New South Wales regional carriers, Hazelton Airlines and Kendell Airlines. It grew into Australia's largest independent regional airline, and in 2021 launched capital-city jet operations under the Rex Airlines brand using Boeing 737s to compete with Qantas and Virgin Australia.

Current Operations

Rex operates an extensive regional turboprop network across New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia using Saab 340 and ATR aircraft. Its domestic jet operations were suspended during a 2024 voluntary administration; the group was subsequently acquired by U.S. holding company Air T in a sale completed in December 2025, and continues regional flying under the Rex brand.
