History

Atlantic Airways was established in 1987 as a partnership between the Faroese government and Danish carrier Cimber Air, becoming fully state-owned in 1989. After early financial struggles, it reached profitability by 1995 and grew into the Faroe Islands' national carrier, partially privatized in 2007.

Current Operations

Atlantic Airways operates Airbus A320-family jets from its Vágar Airport base to destinations across the Nordic region and seasonal points in Spain, France and the UK, alongside an AgustaWestland AW139 helicopter service linking outlying Faroese communities; it briefly operated transatlantic flights to New York in 2023-2024.
