History

Maldivian Air Taxi was founded in 1993 by Danish investors, beginning seaplane operations that November with two aircraft to serve the rapidly growing network of Maldivian resort islands, and it grew into one of the world's largest seaplane operators alongside rival Trans Maldivian Airways. In February 2013, private equity firm Blackstone Group acquired majority stakes in both Maldivian Air Taxi and Trans Maldivian Airways and merged the two into a single combined operator with a fleet of 44 De Havilland Twin Otter seaplanes.

Current Operations

The merged entity operates today under the Trans Maldivian Airways name rather than the Maldivian Air Taxi brand or 8Q code, running resort transfer, charter and scenic seaplane flights from its base at Velana International Airport in Malé, with an additional operating point at Gan International Airport. Ownership passed from Blackstone to a Bain Capital-led consortium in December 2017, which holds roughly an 80% stake in the airline today.
