History
Insel Air was established in 1993 and began commercial flights in August 2006 as a Dutch Caribbean carrier based in Willemstad, Curaçao, eventually building a network of roughly 22 destinations across the Caribbean, the United States, Colombia, Brazil, and Venezuela. Its close commercial ties to Venezuela became its undoing: the airline accumulated roughly US$100 million in Venezuelan bolívars that could not be converted or repatriated amid that country's currency crisis, starting around 2016. Safety concerns following cabin-pressurization incidents forced the grounding of most of its fleet for inspection in early 2017, and its Aruba-based subsidiary filed for bankruptcy that June.
Current Operations
Insel Air does not operate today. After failed restructuring attempts and unsuccessful talks to find a buyer or new investor, the airline ceased all operations on 16 February 2019 citing an unsustainable financial outlook, and its grounded aircraft were subsequently stored and then scrapped between 2019 and 2022. No successor carrier has taken on its brand, certificate, or routes.
